Chapter 484 - 266: It’s Been Hard on You, Brothers
The roars of bears echoed from across the sea.
Looking toward the sound, they saw several large ships. A line of people stood on their decks, holding what appeared to be Spirit Capturing Devices.
Gu Gaoxu shouted to the soldiers on the high slope, "Aim for the sea! Fire!"
The soldiers on the slope expertly turned their cannons, aiming for the few points of light on the pitch-black sea.
In the moonlight, several massive Thunder Bears leaped onto the beach. They let out two roars and charged the men.
With every step a Thunder Bear took, the ground shook. The immense pressure made many of the soldiers’ legs go weak.
A single swipe of a claw could send a grown man flying dozens of meters.
The regular soldiers couldn’t get close, their blades unable to penetrate the beasts’ incredibly tough hides.
The soldiers Gu Gaoxu had brought were all battle-hardened veterans. Three squads were methodically adjusting the angle of their Mortars.
A second squad raised their Firearms. Muzzle flashes erupted as every bullet struck the Thunder Bears with pinpoint accuracy, leaving only faint red marks on their bodies.
The Thunder Bears slaughtered the soldiers with impunity, and the unarmed men suffered the heaviest casualties.
Gu Gaoxu took the Red Tassel Spear back from a subordinate. Clenching it tightly, he focused all his strength and hurled it.
The Red Tassel Spear tore through the air with a sound like a dragon’s cry and pierced a Thunder Bear’s body.
Ever since cultivating the "True Martial" arts, Gu Gaoxu’s strength was far beyond that of any mortal man.
The Thunder Bear pulled out the Red Tassel Spear, snapped it into four pieces, chewed on them for a moment, and spat them onto the ground.
Watching this, Gu Gaoxu touched his own head. ’If a Thunder Bear took a bite like that out of me, wouldn’t my head just explode like a block of tofu?’
The Red Tassel Spear was, after all, a mundane weapon. It was far too weak to seriously injure a Xingzi like the Thunder Bear.
Gu Gaoxu said, "If I’d known Brother Lu was skilled in the arts of alchemy and forging, I should have had him make a Divine Weapon for me!"
The Mortar fire rocked the great ships on the sea, punching multiple holes in their hulls. Seawater flooded into the cabins.
Even so, the damage wasn’t severe enough to sink the vessels.
In a few more moments, the ships would reach the shore, and hordes of Easterners would be able to disembark.
Gu Gaoxu grabbed Gu Zhaolian and threw him into the midst of his soldiers. Several men with weapons drawn immediately surrounded Gu Zhaolian, pinning him in place.
Gu Gaoxu tossed the small pistol from his waist to a soldier and snatched a Treasure Sword from the man’s hands. "Hold on to my pistol," he ordered. "These are the bullets. Guard it with your life for me."
Gu Gaoxu shoved a pouch of bullets at the soldier as well, then tightened the silk sash at his waist. He addressed his men: "Soldiers, listen up! Hold this high ground and wait for my return!"
’These soldiers are brave fighters,’ Gu Gaoxu thought, ’but they’re ultimately no match for these rampaging Thunder Bears. Better for me to face them than to let my men throw their lives away for nothing.’
Firearms and cannons couldn’t even harm the Thunder Bears. It was clear these were no ordinary beasts; they were Xingzi with hundreds of years of power.
Gu Gaoxu didn’t know any Techniques. He could only rely on his formidable physical strength to face the Thunder Bears head-on.
Gu Gaoxu comforted himself, his only hope was that Lu Yuan would arrive to save them soon. ’Maybe if I can just hold out until dawn, Lu Yuan will be here.’
Three of his generals followed close behind, charging down the slope with Gu Gaoxu.
Sword in hand, Gu Gaoxu cursed, "What are you doing following me?"
The three generals shouted in unison, "We are willing to go through fire and water for you, General!"
"Good! Then charge with me!" Gu Gaoxu stared at the Thunder Bears ahead, his eyes brimming with killing intent as a vicious aura radiated from him.
"Yes, General!" the three generals replied.
On the slope, the remaining general commanded, "Fire on the ships! We must sink them to the bottom of the sea!"
The other soldiers held back the first and second waves of the Little Easterners and Gu Zhaolian’s rebels, vowing to defend their position to the death.
The Little Easterners used the Thunder Bears in a "bear-infantry coordination," steadily consuming the beach as they advanced toward the high ground on the island.
The Mortar shells sent columns of water erupting from the sea. It looked like the great ships wouldn’t make it to shore after all.
The general commanding the Mortars slapped his thigh and sighed. "If only we had a few more Mortars! Or if the Red Coat Cannons in the armory were still functional, these son-of-a-bitch ships would’ve been at the bottom of the sea long ago."
A Soaring Snake erupted from beneath the waves, throwing up a spray dozens of yards high. The serpent’s shriek was so powerful it made many of the soldiers’ ears bleed.
The Soaring Snake coiled above the great ships, spewing a torrent of water that intercepted all the incoming Mortar shells.
Gu Gaoxu weaved between the Thunder Bears. The situation on the sea had gone from bad to worse, and he broke out in a nervous sweat.
One Thunder Bear clapped its paws together, smashing one of the general’s right arms to dust.
If the general hadn’t dodged in time, he would have been killed instantly.
Gu Gaoxu leaped in front of the general, blocking a swipe from the Thunder Bear with his sword held horizontally. "Quickly, get back!" he shouted.
"General, don’t worry about me! Look out!" The general clutched his right arm with his left hand and shoved Gu Gaoxu aside, only to be run through by another Thunder Bear.
"AHHH!" Gu Gaoxu roared. Stomping his right foot, he leaped dozens of feet into the air. He gripped his sword with both hands, and a clear ringing sound emanated from the blade, audible for dozens of yards around.
Gu Gaoxu brought his sword down, cleaving clean through one of the Thunder Bear’s arms. The Treasure Sword shattered into several pieces.
"You’ll pay me back for that!" Gu Gaoxu roared.
"The General is mighty!"
At that moment, Lu Yuan and the others had reached the mainland shore, only a few nautical miles away from Elephant Island.
