Chapter 98: Using a Zombie as a Weapon
After all, while humans often used phrases like as stupid as a pig, pigs were actually not unintelligent animals.
Of course, intelligence varied even within the same species.
Perhaps the pig that had fused into this zombie just happened to be a particularly stupid one.
The brief moment of awkward silence did not cause the remaining Zombie Chimera to retreat.
Very quickly, they resumed charging toward Joo Joowon, and the embarrassment caused by the Pig Chimera’s disgraceful performance disappeared almost instantly.
Joo Joowon used spider silk to maintain distance while circling around them and firing bolts from his crossbow.
Thwang! Thwang! Thwang!
Three bolts shot toward the same Zombie Chimera.
"ROAR!"
The Dog Chimera possessed explosive strength and speed far beyond expectations.
It accurately tracked the incoming bolts and, before they could strike, opened its mouth and bit directly onto one of them.
Its body twisted unnaturally in midair, changing direction halfway through its leap and narrowly avoiding Joo Joowon’s spider silk.
Having suffered once already, the Zombie Chimera were clearly now wary of Joo Joowon’s methods and refused to fall for the same trick again.
Joo Joowon was not surprised by this result.
The Zombie Chimera were not low level zombies that acted purely on instinct.
There was no reason to expect them to fall into the same trap twice.
As long as they remained wary of the spider silk, however, they could not afford to completely ignore it either.
Their attention would inevitably be divided and disrupted.
In that sense, Joo Joowon had still achieved his objective.
Taking advantage of the opening created by the Dog Chimera’s frontal assault, the two Cat Chimera had already bitten through the spider silk restraining them.
Unlike the Dog Chimera, however, they did not rush directly toward Joo Joowon.
Instead, they silently began circling around behind him.
Both Cat Chimera possessed the agility and hunting instincts characteristic of feline predators.
They allowed the Dog Chimera to remain in front while waiting patiently for the perfect opportunity.
The moment Joo Joowon was forced to dodge the Dog Chimera’s attack, the two cats lunged toward him without hesitation
.
The three Chimera nearly sealed off every possible escape route.
Most people would have had no choice but to endure one attack and force their way through in a single direction.
Joo Joowon, however, had no intention of doing that.
Spider silk attached effortlessly to the wall beside him and instantly pulled him upward, causing the two Cat Chimera to crash into empty air and nearly collide with each other instead.
Joo Joowon then raised the crossbow with his other hand.
His target remained the Dog Chimera.
He needed a breakthrough point.
While Zombie Chimera inherited the strengths of the animals they fused with, they also inherited part of those animals’ instincts and habits.
Compared to the agile feline Chimera, the Dog Chimera was undoubtedly the best target for Joo Joowon at this moment.
As long as he could eliminate it, the enemy would lose its main tank and frontline fighter, making the remaining two Chimera much easier to deal with.
After all, most feline predators were not known for cooperative hunting.
The Dog Chimera dodged Joo Joowon’s attacks while continuously closing the distance between them.
The surrounding buildings were not very tall.
The highest among them were only five or six stories.
With the jumping power possessed by higher level zombies, as long as they could find something to use as a foothold, reaching him was not entirely impossible.
As for feline creatures, that height was even less of a challenge.
Because of that, even though Joo Joowon stood on the wall, he was far from being completely safe.
Taking advantage of the fact that Joo Joowon was occupied dealing with the three Chimera, the psychic zombie that had been ignored this entire time quietly retreated into the crowd of lower level zombies.
Its appearance was the perfect disguise.
Once its Mental Power recovered enough, it would undoubtedly seize the right opportunity to strike and ensure Joo Joowon died with regret.
It imitated the behavior of ordinary zombies perfectly.
It neither attempted to go around obstacles nor flee the battlefield.
Instead, it squeezed through the crowd while roaring furiously like every other zombie around it.
After all, it had already been hit by a bolt and the wound was located in a very obvious position.
If it did not hide itself among the other zombies, it would be discovered very quickly.
Unfortunately for it, all of that effort turned out to be completely pointless.
Before it could even make use of its ability to slip through openings and exploit opportunities, it suddenly felt its entire body stiffen violently.
Then, just like a radish being pulled from the ground, it was yanked directly out of the zombie crowd.
It had assumed that the attacks from the Zombie Chimera would temporarily distract Joo Joowon from dealing with it.
What it failed to realize was that Joo Joowon had never once forgotten about the poisonous snake that had temporarily lost its fangs.
Compared to the other zombies, it was the one Joo Joowon wanted to eliminate first.
The only reason it had survived this long was because the horde of zombies it summoned had interrupted his plans.
Because the psychic zombie had previously overused its Mental Power, it simply did not have enough strength left to remove the strands of spider silk hidden on parts of its body.
Zombies were not creatures that were sensitive to their own bodies in the first place, so quite a bit of spider silk still remained attached to it.
The moment Joo Joowon found an opening, he immediately pulled it back over.
Joo Joowon directly used the psychic zombie as a flail.
While focusing on fighting the Dog Chimera, whenever one of the Cat Chimera attacked, he would immediately swing the psychic zombie toward them.
There was no sense of friendship or unity between zombies.
Compared to the silent and terrifying spider silk that could bind them without warning, the psychic zombie, whose abilities and habits they already understood, actually seemed less threatening in their eyes.
