Chapter 60: Best Friend’s Title
Jenny felt stunned when Fredrinn suddenly pulled her in a hug.
Her eyes were widened and her arms frozen against his sides.
But before she could react, he continued in her ear, whispering, "You never know, maybe those meatshields could actually become useful. Outside, they are disposable, in here, they are a liability."
Jenny nodded her head shakily, her body feeling slightly stiff while her throat felt dry. She wasn’t an empath or overly emotional, but she hadn’t gotten used to killing either.
For her, killing zombies and humans was different, while for Fredrinn an enemy was an enemy. The race, creed, gender, neither of those mattered.
Fredrinn gently stroked her back after noticing her reaction, before he separated from the hug and glanced at the small group of traitors that were still remaining.
There were a total of 8 men, all of them in a bad condition.
3 of them were middle-aged, around 40-50 years in age. Usually they would be the elders of the group, throwing around their seniority.
But ever since Jacob took control over the group, they already realized that their age meant jackshit when compared to awakeners and strength.
The other 5 were young, around 20-30 years old. Their faces were filled with regret and grief, as they were one of the people who actively participated in the ’planning’.
"If anyone still wants to stay behind and deal with whatever verdict the others decide, it’s your choice. Otherwise, come over. We are heading out after a short breakfast." Fredrinn announced calmly.
Naturally, none of those 8 people decided to stay behind after looking at Jenny and other youngsters.
With Fredrinn’s plan, they at least had a chance to survive and prosper.
Together, they moved towards the original squad of 6, turning it into a large force of 14 people.
Jacob also peeled off from the other group, smiling at Sarah and Rhea. "Ladies, you heard him, would you help me with the breakfast please?"
With Rhea being known as a foodie and knowledgeable about cooking, asking her was obvious. And as for Sarah, she was the only woman remaining who was simply chosen because of her gender.
Olivia was unfortunately lost in last night’s carnage.
The girls nodded, following Jacob as they moved towards the pile of food boxes that was originally reserved for the unchosens.
The remaining unchosen’s eyelids twitched seeing it, but they had no right to complain either as they could only watch their food getting taken in front of their eyes.
Toby, Naomi and Harry also decided to help, leaving behind Andrea, Christine and other infected such as Dickens.
"What are we doing about the infected now?" Jenny turned to look at Fredrinn, while also giving a side glance at Max.
She knew that Max would be quite interested in that topic, considering Christine.
Fredrinn shrugged in response, gesturing towards Max.
Max grit his teeth seeing him dump the choice onto him. They knew that he was protective of Christine, and yet, they were forcing him to make a choice.
He hesitated for several seconds, before sighing deeply.
He gave Christine an apologetic look before murmuring, "The best course of action would be to keep them locked in a makeshift cage like last night..."
Fredrinn smiled slightly, nodding, "I agree."
Christine however, didn’t expect Max to side against her. She gave him a furious stare, looking at him as if he had betrayed her.
And in her eyes, he indeed had.
But Max only sighed and averted his eyes. Regardless of his feelings, he didn’t want to be negligent and ignore the infected threat.
It was a ticking time bomb, and if he was present here, he would’ve never allowed it. But in their absence, he would rather not take any risk.
After the discussions were finished, Jenny gently suggested for them to eat as Andrea wandered closer.
She looked up at Fredrinn, her eyes squinted and lips pouty.
She hooked her finger in the air, gesturing to him to come closer.
Fredrinn hummed, amused. He leaned down, bringing his head near Andrea’s face.
But this time, she didn’t blush like always. Instead, she smiled beautifully, moving her head to the side as she leaned closer.
Her breath hit his ear, spreading a warm feeling down his body that sent his blood rushing towards his crotch.
In a low, seductive voice she whispered, "See? You can speak in ear normally without a need for a hug. Considering your memories, I think you might have forgotten it so keep it in mind from now, hmm?"
Saying that, she casually retreated and hooked her arm in his elbow, leading him to a place where most of the crowd was gathering to eat some breakfast.
Fredrinn could only blink in surprise and go along with her, feeling too speechless and slack jawed about her actions.
Was that a threat...?
But... Why did he feel more aroused by it? Just the way she said it turned Fredrinn on to no end.
He actively had to focus on his body not to get hard in the middle of the crowd.
He always knew that Andrea had a slightly jealous streak to her, but this was the first time she acted on it.
Jenny was left standing awkwardly at her place when Andrea pulled Fredrinn away.
She didn’t know what Andrea said, but looking at Fredrinn’s stunned expression, it was clearly nothing normal.
For a moment, she debated whether to ignore the ’non-couple’ and go to her friends for eating instead, but then her mind stubbornly refused to retreat from the challenge.
She was torn between the two choices, and just then, Aadav called for her.
"Ay Jenny, come over. I saved you a seat." He was currently sitting one space apart from Fredrinn, on the floor as most of the furniture was pretty messed up anyway.
The cardboard boxes were getting used as makeshift tables.
Next to Fredrinn, Andrea leaned onto him casually, marking her territory like he belonged only to her.
’Aadav, I hereby give you my best friend title.’ Jenny grinned seeing the view, flicking her hair and strolling towards the empty space between Fredrinn and Aadav.
"Hey, I guess we’re sharing a table as well." Jenny said, leaning forward and looking at Fredrinn with a sweet smile.
