A wave of warmth and kindness washed over her, dispelling the coldness and unease in Chloe Reed’s heart.

Her grandmother didn’t say a word, simply gazing at her with such gentleness that Chloe’s eyes began to sting, and she felt the urge to break down and sob.

But she couldn’t.

She wasn’t a child anymore, and her grandmother was getting old. She had to learn to keep her emotions in check, to face these hardships on her own.

’She’d always done a good job of that in the past, hadn’t she?’

Chloe Reed closed her eyes again, savoring the steady warmth flowing into her palm.

After the acupuncture session, Fiona Linton adjusted the prescription. The herbal soup had been brewed and was brought up by a servant.

Chloe Reed’s face contorted as she forced down the bowl of herbal medicine. She then turned a pitiful gaze toward her grandmother.

The old woman pulled an orange candy from her pocket. "Such a big girl, and still so scared of bitter medicine. Here, eat this. The bitterness will be gone once you do."

The sweet and sour candy melted in her mouth, gradually washing away the bitter taste of the medicine.

A smile spread across Chloe Reed’s face, and she hugged her grandmother.

The old woman said, "I just hope you can recover soon. I’m really not used to you being unable to talk to me."

Fiona Linton smiled from the sidelines. "Grandma, Chloe’s condition is steadily improving. She might just wake up one day and be able to speak again. Don’t worry, and don’t put too much pressure on her."

"Mm, I understand." The old woman nodded. Noticing that Walker Grant had also finished his medicine, she walked over, placed a candy in his palm, and said kindly, "Here, you eat one too. You’re all just children."

Walker Grant froze, his voice a little hoarse. "Thank you, Grandma."

"Alright, you two should rest now that you’ve had your medicine." The old woman stood up and left the master bedroom.

Fiona Linton looked at Chloe and asked, "Chloe, do you want to stay with me tonight?"

’She had so many questions she wanted to ask. How did they get together? How did this damn scumbag end up hooking up with his own sister-in-law? She was dying of curiosity.’

Chloe Reed shook her head and typed on her phone: "No. I promised I would take care of him, so I can’t go back on my word."

"Hmph. Lucky him," Fiona Linton muttered, shooting Walker Grant a sideways glance before letting out a cool, dismissive snort.

Chloe Reed gave a small smile and walked her friend out, tracing words onto her palm as they went.

Don’t be so hostile toward him. I’ll handle things between us. You’re working for him and taking his money right now, so you should at least keep things civil on the surface.

Fiona Linton stuck her tongue out at her. "It’s just, the thought of a man getting with his own sister-in-law makes me sick. But I get it. I’ll behave myself from now on."

Chloe Reed watched her head downstairs, a wave of warmth washing through her.

’What happened before... maybe he was deceived, or maybe he had his reasons. But he was the one who made the choice.’

’After all this time together, he had gotten used to her always being there, so he took her and her feelings for granted.’

’And she had always been demanding.’

’She only wanted to be cherished above all others.’

’An unconditional, one-of-a-kind love.’

’If he couldn’t give her that, then it was over.’

Chloe Reed composed herself and returned to the bedroom.

Walker Grant was still sitting on the edge of the bed. The gauze wasn’t covering his eyes, which were downcast. His jet-black eyes were dull and lifeless, and his expression held a look of inexplicable desolation.

Hearing her footsteps, he spoke. "I thought you weren’t coming back."

Chloe Reed held up her phone, having typed, "Do you want to take a shower?"

"Okay."

Walker Grant’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and he stood up.
