Chapter 436: Substitute Bride of the Demon King (40)
Ellie never expected to be greeted with the chilling Demon King who now loomed before her, radiating an aura of menace, when they meet again.
But what Silas said suddenly woke her up, his words slicing through the air like a blade. It dawned on Ellie that Silas had changed. The man she once knew, who had obeyed her unconditionally and braved any peril for her sake, was gone. The realization struck Ellie like a thunderclap, and she instinctively took a few steps back, her disbelief manifesting in her trembling voice, "You... you actually... dare to talk to me... like this?"
Silas looked at Ellie with his lips curled into a mocking sneer, a cruel twist that seemed entirely foreign to her. "Why don’t I dare talk to you like this? Have you forgotten, Ellie? You and Andre deceived me on my wedding day, substituting an impostor for the true bride. You two plotted and schemed as if I were nothing more than a fool waiting to be taken advantage of. In addition, you and Andre even secretly planned to get married and be a loving couple for life. Do you really believe I have such a gentle disposition—so accommodating that I would allow you to deceive me over and over again without exacting some form of retribution?"
Hearing this, Ellie felt a little apologetic for a moment, but a fiercer emotion quickly eclipsed this feeling.
Who could he truly blame for such a thing? Wasn’t it all his fault for making his own decision in the first place? She had been clear in her intentions, adamantly stating that she did not want to marry him. It was he who had insisted on sending a representative to approach the Tallis noble family to ask for her hand in marriage.
She could understand why Silas was angry at the moment. Her decision to escape their marriage and subsequently pursue a relationship with someone else was wrong from the start. It was undeniable, yes. But her marriage to Andre was fake! They had a false marriage solely to get rid of Silas’s persistent entanglements.
As these thoughts raced through her mind, Ellie took a deep, steadying breath, allowing her tumultuous emotions to settle, if only slightly. She knew that she could not get angry at that moment and needed to explain things to Silas with calmness to break through the barrier of anger that surrounded him.
"Sil," she began, her voice softly laced with urgency, " please do not be like this, okay? Calm down. This is a matter between us; it has nothing to do with Andre. Now tell me honestly, what did you do to him? I need to know."
Silas could not help but let out a snort when he heard that she was still concerned about Andre’s condition. "You want to know what happened to Andre, right?" he responded, a cruel twist to his tone. "Fine, I will enlighten you. I crushed his magic core and shattered his legs." He raised his head and looked straight into Ellie’s eyes, his tone light and careless as he continued, "But don’t worry, I showed mercy by not killing him. Moreover, I gave him the exact same bride he gave me before— a fitting replacement in marriage."
As he spoke of the replacement bride, Silas’s voice seemed to pause unnoticeably. There was a barely perceptible hitch in his voice, a moment’s hesitation that belied his nonchalance.
Yes, he had pushed Leila onto Andre, but in doing so, he had also snatched Ellie back into his grasp. And yet, why did he feel a suffocating sensation in his chest that became more and more severe as he talked about Leila? An inexplicable heaviness settled in his chest, growing heavier as time passed.
It was obviously Ellie that he wanted all along... It was Ellie that he had always desired, and it had always been Ellie, the one who had captured his heart. Leila was merely a fake who looked similar to Ellie, a shadow that could never measure up to the real thing... Ellie was his true choice, the one he had always wanted.
Silas thought so in his heart.
Ellie, who was seated directly across from Silas, took a few steps back after hearing what he said, her heart pounding with disbelief at the gravity of his words. Her eyes widened in shock and simmering anger, reflecting the turmoil within her.
"How could you... How could you treat Andre like that?!" she burst out, her voice trembling with emotion. "You actually destroyed his magic core?! Do you not know that a magic core is as vital as life itself to a magician?! This is more cruel than killing him! Silas, even if you hate him, you should not humiliate him like this!"
In fact, Ellie felt unnerved and unsettled in her chest ever since she came to the castle, as if something was not right. Silas seemed to have changed. The warmth that once colored his gaze as he looked at her, filled with compromise and submission, had been replaced by something darker and colder. It seemed that he had changed since he became the Demon King. He had become a completely different person from what he was before.
The more Ellie cared about Andre, the angrier Silas felt.
"What? Are you feeling distressed for Andre again?" Silas sneered, his eyes narrowing with sarcasm. "You care so much about Andre and are so invested in his plight, yet why do you turn a blind eye to your own little sister, your twin sister of the same blood?"
For some reason, the mention of Leila, whom no one cared about, struck a nerve within Silas. It had never been clearer to him that no one really cared about Leila, as if she were just cannon fodder, existed solely to be summoned at will without regard for her life and death. She was an afterthought, a life disregarded by all.
Little sister? Her little sister?
