Chapter 691: Testing the Waters
Captain Zhu felt incredibly downcast inside.
He clearly sensed a feeling of utter despair appear in his mind, one that couldn’t be shaken off.
Zombies all around the world were the same.
This situation was likely due to the fall of the Emperor.
Yet, after a while, that feeling vanished.
In its place was the joy of regaining something lost.
The inexplicably joyful feeling in his mind didn’t make Captain Zhu feel happy at all.
He didn’t know what was going on.
Could zombies really be resurrected?
Clearly, that was impossible.
Having the brain’s crystal core extracted meant the zombie’s death, and even if a new core was inserted into the zombie’s remains, it wouldn’t come back to life.
Captain Zhu began to doubt the emotions he had just felt.
Could it be that the Emperor hadn’t died, but merely encountered danger, and when he escaped, the zombies no longer felt sad?
But that didn’t make sense.
Zombies wouldn’t feel sad for no reason, nor would they suddenly burst into emotion due to the Emperor being injured or in danger.
Only the fall of an Emperor would cause such an effect.
When the Emperor falls, a magnetic field is released, sensed only by zombies as sadness. This field is indescribable, yet clearly signifies the Emperor’s fall.
Captain Zhu’s mind raced intensely.
Finally, he could only comfort himself with one reason, maybe there were two Zombie Emperors in the world, one died, but the other remains!
But this explanation didn’t account for why the zombies suddenly became excited again.
Captain Zhu suddenly stood up from the sofa, "We need to take a trip to Yunhua Safety Base."
He had a strong feeling that the key was Zhang Yiming.
He couldn’t find Zhang Yiming, so he had to go to Yunhua Safety Base, where there were people Zhang Yiming cared about.
By directing zombies to attack Yunhua Safety Base, he could determine whether Zhang Yiming was still alive.
He had to figure out what had happened today.
If Zhang Yiming was dead, he had to visit Zhang Yiming’s place to find Xiao Song Zombie.
If Zhang Yiming wasn’t dead, he had to understand how the zombies could come back to life.
"You just said the Emperor is still around, what do you mean?"
Wang Ge’s smile froze on his face, listening to the surroundings becoming more agitated than before, and all his excitement dissipated.
If Zhang Yiming wasn’t dead, then wasn’t his joy for nothing?
"You have to see it to believe it. I just can’t believe there’s a way in this world for zombies to be resurrected, or that there are indeed two Zhang Yiming’s."
Captain Zhu couldn’t suppress the upward curl of his lips, a result of the sudden excitement in his mind.
Even though his mind was already agitated to the extreme, he was still inexplicably excited like the other zombies.
He had no doubt if he appeared under Zhang Yiming’s brainwaves, he would definitely become his most loyal subordinate.
This thought gave him a sense of crisis.
His fingers instinctively touched a device under his hair.
This device could temporarily suppress his brainwaves, preventing other zombies from detecting them.
This was why he was willing to follow Wang Ge.
Only in this way, could he silently hide in Shanghai, avoiding Zhang Yiming’s discovery, giving him a chance to retrieve Xiao Song Zombie.
"Two Zhang Yiming’s?"
When Wang Ge heard Captain Zhu’s words, he reached out and touched his chin.
He had faced Zhang Yiming head-on a few times, the first time was in Zombie Village, when he had just begun to become the Emperor of zombies.
Though his brainwaves were shockingly powerful, they were somewhat immature, and when contesting for control of the zombies, it wasn’t a guaranteed win immediately.
Wang Ge had also faced Zhang Yiming head-on when he acted against the Bai Family.
At that time, Zhang Yiming was truly powerful, as if he had been the Zombie Emperor for many years.
Just standing there, with a single thought, he easily gained control over the zombies.
They looked the same, but their aura was different.
One had restrained emotions, clearly a zombie but still trying to control his emotions deliberately.
The other’s aura was outward, even when deliberately controlling his emotions, his hostility spilled over.
Only then did Wang Ge realize in hindsight that these two Zhang Yiming’s might not be the same person.
But Wang Ge still found it strange; brainwaves are unique, and he had never sensed two zombies with completely identical brainwaves.
There was a hint of inquiry in Wang Ge’s eyes. If there were indeed two Zhang Yiming’s, how could that be?
He never believed the Classic of Mountains and Seas was fiction because he and the institute’s existence proved that the Classic was Earth’s autobiography from the start.
The various creatures that later emerged affirmed this point.
Yet Wang Ge hadn’t figured out how one could be resurrected or create an identical zombie.
With doubts, Wang Ge and Captain Zhu decided to probe into Yunhua Safety Base.
Wang Ge directly opened the glass door confining Captain Zhu, letting him out.
Captain Zhu patted nonexistent dust on himself, glanced back at his living quarters, and gave Wang Ge a meaningful look.
His throat moved slightly, then he pretended nothing had happened and followed behind Wang Ge.
Now, he could only follow Wang Ge like a dog, but once he had the capability and ensured Xiao Song Zombie’s safety, Wang Ge would be nothing more than a piece of delicious flesh to him.
"Where are you off to? Get back!"
Just as Wang Ge and Captain Zhu were about to leave the underground lab, Dean Wang, wearing a white lab coat, suddenly appeared before them.
His face was a bit stern. Though he had no superpowers and couldn’t use brainwaves, he still made the surrounding researchers lower their heads.
"I’m stepping out; I need to find out why the zombies are so active!"
When Wang Ge said this, his expression wasn’t pleasant, forcing a smile.
Since losing an arm, his chance of defeating the old wolf had drifted further away, so now he too learned to be servile.
"You can’t go out; our research institute in Shanghai has just been established. Going out risks exposure."
Dean Wang left this single remark and turned away.
Wang Ge stared intently at Dean Wang’s slightly stout figure for a long time before turning away, silently returning to his room.
Captain Zhu gave a light snort and silently returned to his room as well.
Without the help of the outside researchers, Captain Zhu closed the glass door himself, even giving a smile to the researcher locking the door.
"Doesn’t the Dean find this situation intriguing?"
Captain Zhu lazily sat on the sofa, casually making the remark.
"Of course, he’s curious, but recently the institute has been targeted by two mysterious individuals and a powerful zombie, several underground labs have been wiped out. Although the Shanghai institute is newly established, it has significant investment and can’t be easily exposed."
The one closing the door was a young man; after hearing Captain Zhu’s complaint, he speculated wildly.
After speaking, he left.
Captain Zhu closed his eyes silently; zombies didn’t need sleep, he was in thought.
Thinking about who the two mysterious individuals and the powerful zombie could be.
As for the zombie, it was undoubtedly Zhang Yiming, but who were the two mysterious individuals?
Captain Zhu sat there for a whole day without moving until a researcher passed a tray through a window, prompting him to open his eyes.
The tray held a bloody human head.
It belonged to the young, talkative researcher who shut the door.
Captain Zhu smiled at the camera on the wall, unbotheredly picked up the bloody head, and started gnawing, deliberately facing the camera.
The crunching sounds emanated from Captain Zhu’s mouth...
