Chapter 142: Boost The Stats
"Alright. We’ve done as much as we can to fortify the apartments, so I’ll splurge a bunch of my own stored points and buy weapons for the apartments.
Is that also a priority for the Kalkan Fleet?" Kalli asked Captain Kovalev.
"It is now. There isn’t much that we can do in the time that we have left, since the trial ends at midnight, and we can’t get another round of quests done. The best that we can do is fight until dark, and return to the ships for the final assessment.
However, if you can generate fishing equipment, we would purchase that as well."
Kalli nodded. "I can do that as well. You can work out the balance with your team, but we can definitely get you both fishing equipment and weapons."
That sent the Captain into another flurry of messages, trying to balance what their people needed versus what they could afford to purchase.
It also gave Kalli a chance to finally choose her level 5 perk.
{Level 5 Reward Chosen} [Discounted Weapons and Armour]
{All items from the weapons and armour section are now 50 percent lower price.}
{Weapons and Armour Section Rare Grade Upgrade cost reduced}
[ Oh, now we’re talking. Half off the upgrade to make rare weapons available? They’re fifty percent more damage than the common grade, instead of twenty-five for the Uncommon Grade.
That’s going to make a world of difference in future battles.
I wonder what it does with one point weapons, though? There was never an option for fractional transfers of points. Does it just give me two of them instead?
I will have to test that before we get too far.
But what am I going to give the people? They don’t have some system granted skill with weapons to rely upon, and most of them are still human strength.
Giving them all swords or maces would be a mess. But giving them all laser rifles would be incredibly expensive. Even just a few of them would still add up quickly. ]
Perhaps she should give them standard rifles? Or shotguns? Those were at least easy to aim with. It would be loud and messy, but something breached the base, wasn’t that inevitable?
That sounded like it would do well enough for them. Shotguns and machetes. Everyone could figure out those two basic weapons, and if they did make it to hero status, they would serve them well in the Rat King Dungeon.
Every little bit helped, and if more people really did make it to hero status, they could begin to quickly move through the early stages.
The heroes watched Kalli’s face contort through a half dozen different versions of excited, contemplative, and concerned, before settling on determined. It was almost like they could see the actual thought process going on in her head, as it all passed over her face.
"Okay, I have a plan. While the teams work to expand our fields and get more tubers planted, I will purchase weapons for the residents of the apartments. Then, we will work on shelters.
There are some options, especially with the speed some of these trees grow.
Just look at the awning that the tubers have made for themselves out of the balsa trees since the storm began. They’ve done a wonderful job of it, and it’s nearly a complete shelter wall now. Plus, the sheds we wove.
I think that with that level of growth, we should be able to create natural growth houses easily enough. Or we can have the Earth mages make concrete walls, like they helped reshape the ground for our perimeter.
Those will come during the next trial, but they’re higher priority."
This time, it was everyone else making notes, while Kalli had prepared the vague outline of a plan in her mind. They could start to expand the housing within the walls, but a lot of it would depend on what sort of trial they got next.
Kalli decided to just buy stuff in advance, then they could hand it out while she went to meet with the Kalkan Heroes.
Two hundred shotguns cost her a hundred points, twenty cases of shells cost her ten points, and two hundred more machetes cost her another hundred points.
That should be enough to prepare a defensive force if anything got inside the walls.
The last thing that she wanted to do was to put some turrets up on the actual academy walls. An inner defensive layer, in case of airborne attacks, or surprises.
They had been lucky not to face flying monsters so far, but that likely wouldn’t last.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I will leave you to your plans. There are weapons in the side room for the apartments, distribute them while I am out. It shouldn’t be long. They’ve all got their missions completed, so it’s just the final turn in and a sale.
Captain, shall we?"
With so much to do, nobody tried to stop Kalli from leaving.
The helicopters were waiting, and the pilots were in a great mood, after a night in the comfortable beds of the Academy, instead of the cramped quarters of their bunks.
The Arks had never been made for long-term living comfort, they were emergency evacuation vessels that were intended to fit the maximum number of refugees in living conditions that were exactly in line with the minimum standards according to the interplanetary concords on the treatment of noncombat personnel.
While that was better than many people who were living in the slums of a war torn planet, it was only marginally higher than the standards that sailors in submarines and other notoriously cramped vessels enjoyed.
Of course, on the Ark, the soldiers actually had a bit more space than average, but that was to be expected.
In this situation, the good quarters were for the "Heroes" which were basically soldiers in the Kalkan Fleet. They served the military structure, and protected the ships. No matter what you actually called them, they put in the work to earn the good rooms.
