As she spoke, she went to get his pajamas and started running the water in the bathroom.

When she came out, Leona Grant was still standing in the same spot, his deep gaze fixed on her.

Annabelle Linton sighed, walked up to him, and handed him the pajamas. "Go take a shower first."

Leona Grant looked at her for a moment before taking the pajamas from her hand and tossing them onto the bed.

Before Annabelle Linton could react, he spun around and pinned her against the wall.

He braced one hand against the wall, looking down at her.

Annabelle Linton wasn’t short, but she was still much shorter than him, only reaching his chest.

A cool, domineering aura washed over her. She avoided his gaze, looking away instead...

With his other hand, Leona Grant forcefully turned her face to his, compelling her to meet his gaze.

Annabelle Linton kept her eyes lowered.

Looking at her silent form, Leona Grant felt a knot of emotions he couldn’t quite express. It was not a pleasant feeling.

Fueled by alcohol, he pressed her against the wall and kissed her.

Annabelle Linton neither cooperated nor struggled.

After a moment, Leona Grant pulled away. He tilted her face up with one hand. "Are you mad at me, hmm?"

"No."

"Then what’s wrong?"

"Nothing."

Seeing her so sullen, a stark contrast to her usual cool indifference, made his heart ache.

Leona Grant pursed his lips and mumbled, "I don’t like that dog..."

Annabelle Linton smiled at him and replied amicably, "Then we won’t keep him."

"..." Leona Grant stared at her in astonishment.

"I’ll have him sent away tomorrow."

"..."

Annabelle Linton had thought it through.

’Leona Grant’s concerns weren’t entirely unreasonable. She and Aaron Wyatt had raised Stuart together, so bringing him into their home now really wasn’t appropriate.’

’After all, she and Aaron Wyatt had once been on the verge of getting married. No man would be able to stand for it.’

’Since they’d agreed to make their marriage work, they shouldn’t let small things damage their relationship.’

’Stuart was a companion and a blessing, but she had to be rational. You win some, you lose some; you can’t have your cake and eat it too.’

’She would find the best boarding facility for him; she wouldn’t let him be mistreated. For a dog, that was still a very good life.’

’She understood Leona Grant’s reaction today. He was just being insecure, plain and simple.’

’Since they were husband and wife, they should make it work. Both partners in a marriage are equal; neither one should have to bear an unfair burden.’

Annabelle Linton pulled out of his embrace, picked the pajamas up off the bed, and handed them to him again. "Go take a shower," she said softly. "Have you eaten?"

’I was so furious today, I haven’t eaten a thing...’

’Normally, if he hadn’t eaten by this time, he’d just skip the meal. But today, he wanted to eat...’

’Having someone who cares whether you’ve eaten... it’s such a warm feeling.’

Leona Grant shook his head.

Annabelle Linton smiled resignedly. "Go shower first, and I’ll make you something simple. Is there anything you particularly want to eat?"

Leona Grant pursed his lips. "Anything is fine."

"Okay." Annabelle Linton left without giving him another look.

A strange feeling stirred in Leona Grant’s heart.

After his shower, a bowl of noodles was waiting for him, just as he’d expected. He didn’t need to guess—Annabelle Linton’s cooking was always delicious.

After eating, he brushed his teeth, washed his face, and went to sleep.

The lights went out, plunging the room into darkness and complete silence.

Annabelle Linton was already fast asleep, her back turned to him.

Leona Grant watched her, feeling a mix of grievance and guilt.

He could tell Annabelle Linton was attached to the dog, but the thought that it was a gift from Aaron Wyatt—that they had raised it together for so many years—made his stomach turn...
