Chapter 542: I Love You, You Love Me 2
Annabelle Linton was willing to compromise for them, but she was genuinely unhappy about it.
By contrast, he felt so childish and unreasonable. He kept saying he loved her, yet he was still making her give up so much.
"Annabelle Linton..."
He called out to her softly, his heart heavy, not expecting her to still be awake.
Annabelle Linton answered, "What’s wrong?"
Leona Grant was a little surprised. Then, his voice low and melancholic, he said, "I think you’re upset..."
Annabelle Linton was at a loss.
She turned over and immediately saw him looking at her, his eyes glistening with a hint of grievance.
’Why does this man seem to get more childish by the day?’
’Is it that the more domineering someone is, the more childish they actually are? Do they use a cold exterior to hide an innocent heart?’
In truth, people like Leona Grant were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They never lacked for money, fame, or fortune.
But at the same time, these birthrights also caused them a great deal of trouble.
...For example, they were always surrounded by people trying to curry favor for money and fame. They had never experienced genuine affection.
That’s why when Leona Grant couldn’t have Annabelle Linton, he wanted her by his side. And now that she was, he was afraid she would abandon him.
He always appeared heartless and cynical, as if he could calmly hold up the sky with one hand if it were to fall. But at the end of the day, he was still only human—a person who needed emotional care and affection.
...The truth is, when a man in a relationship starts to seem more vulnerable and less charming, it’s because he has truly fallen in love.
That was precisely the case with Leona Grant. He didn’t know how to express his feelings, so he could only resort to these childish, simple-minded actions to get Annabelle Linton’s attention.
And to make matters worse, his high status made him proud and petulant in his childishness.
It was just as Leona Grant himself had said: if she just coaxed him a little, he would listen to her. His stubbornness was all for show.
There are two kinds of childish people: those who are genuinely foolish, and those who possess a deep-seated innocence and kindness. Leona Grant was the latter.
Annabelle Linton pressed her lips together, a resigned smile on her face. She hooked her arm around his neck and kissed the corner of his mouth. Then, settling into a comfortable position with her hand on his waist, she said softly, "I’m not. Don’t overthink things. Let’s sleep."
With that, she closed her eyes.
Leona Grant looked down at her. Her head rested on his chest, her light breaths falling against his skin. It tickled, but it was also incredibly comforting.
Most importantly, she smelled so good. Her scent wasn’t too strong or too faint; it was elegant and calming.
But for some reason, that oppressive feeling grew even stronger.
He hated being so insecure, so paranoid.
Leona Grant reached out, pulling Annabelle Linton closer into his embrace. He then draped her leg over his waist, and only then did he start to feel better.
He ruffled her hair and closed his eyes. Drifting into a hazy sleep, he murmured, "Don’t leave me..."
...
The next day, Annabelle Linton woke to a bustling clamor.
She slipped on her shoes, got out of bed, and looked out at the balcony. Leona Grant was playing with Stuart.
A smile touched the corners of Annabelle Linton’s lips.
The truth was, her behavior yesterday was half-sincere—she had been ready to give up Stuart. But the other half had been a gamble.
She was betting that Leona Grant would let Stuart stay.
It looked like her bet had paid off.
The best kind of love is one where both people are willing to take a step back for the other.
When Stuart saw Annabelle Linton, he barked excitedly, "WOOF WOOF WOOF!"
