Chapter 537: Don’t I Have a Wife?
Under the golden sun, Annabelle Linton was backlit as she bathed Stuart. The setting sun stretched her shadow long and slanted, casting a rare warmth across her usually impassive face.
Although she spoke words of reprimand, her expression was filled with deep affection.
For a while now, she had been busy, and Stuart also hadn’t been adjusting well to the new environment, so he had been recuperating at a pet center.
The pet center had called Annabelle Linton earlier to say Stuart had recovered and could be picked up.
Annabelle Linton went to get him, and the little guy was so happy that he got himself covered in dirt on the way back, so Annabelle Linton had no choice but to give him a bath.
Huskies are truly the most spirited of dogs, and they’re especially adorable when they try to act cute.
He was just about clean.
Annabelle Linton turned to get a towel, but as soon as she turned, before she could even react, she slammed into a firm embrace!
Leona Grant hugged her tightly, as if afraid she would disappear. His voice trembled, thick with distress, "I woke up and couldn’t find you. Where did you go?"
Originally, Annabelle Linton had been planning to ignore him for the whole day, still angry about how he’d worn her out last night.
’Damn it, last night I felt like I was going to die under him!’
But seeing him like this, her heart couldn’t help but ache for him.
It wasn’t hard to guess what his reaction meant.
She let him hold her without reacting, and Annabelle Linton gave a faint smile. "Nowhere special. I saw you were sleeping so soundly earlier, so I didn’t want to disturb you."
Leona Grant held her, still sounding hurt. "I woke up and couldn’t find you. You scared me to death..."
A pang of sorrow pricked Annabelle Linton’s heart. She frowned as she looked at him and asked softly, "What’s wrong?"
"I had a nightmare." Leona Grant said helplessly, still holding her. "I dreamed you were gone. I looked for you for a long, long time, but I still couldn’t find you."
’A nightmare...’
’So, to him, not being able to find me is a nightmare.’
Annabelle Linton gave a resigned smile and looked at him, asking, "What on earth is going through your mind?"
Leona Grant cupped her face, looking at her with a complex gaze, and said in a low voice, "I just don’t feel secure..."
"Not secure about what?"
"I don’t know."
Perhaps her change of heart was too sudden, or perhaps even he couldn’t bring himself to forgive himself.
People are just that contradictory sometimes.
You want what you can’t have, and when you finally get it, you feel insecure because it happened too quickly.
"I always feel so anxious. Annabelle Linton, will you leave me?" he asked, looking at her earnestly.
’We only just made up yesterday, how is he already worrying about this?’
Annabelle Linton really didn’t know what to say.
She gave him a little kiss and said with a smile, "You really like to overthink things."
"I won’t anymore. Will you leave me?" he asked stubbornly.
Annabelle Linton lowered her eyes and thought for a moment, then raised them to look at him and answered simply, "I won’t."
’Barring any uncontrollable circumstances, I probably won’t leave him again.’
’Actually, this is pretty good, isn’t it?’
He kissed her, held her, and said with a smile, "Thank you."
’Thank you for being willing to forgive me.’
’Thank you for being willing to give me another chance.’
"I won’t leave you, either."
Annabelle Linton gave a soft "mhm," then looked at his open bathrobe.
Because he had been running around in such a hurry, it had fallen open, revealing a wide expanse of his chest and abs.
She frowned and pulled his bathrobe closed for him, unable to stop herself from muttering, "What’s wrong with you? You don’t even know how to wear your clothes properly. What if you catch a cold?"
"But I have a wife, don’t I? My wife will help me get dressed," he said with a smile, looking down at the top of her head.
