Chapter 568: How Can He Be So Naughty...
Roxanne Jennings looked at Annabelle, asking in disbelief, "Annabelle, is that really what you think?"
Annabelle gave a faint, sincere smile. "Mom, twenty years of feelings don’t just vanish. As long as Leona treats me well from now on, I will continue to live a good life with him."
Roxanne was moved by her words, and her heart ached for Annabelle.
She had heard parts of Annabelle’s story from Ashley and knew that Annabelle truly hadn’t had an easy life.
She didn’t have a mother, and her stepfather and stepmother treated her poorly. On top of that, she had to care for her younger brother, always keeping her head down at home.
After marrying into the Grant Family, she had to constantly read Leona’s moods, living in constant fear.
Annabelle’s life was suffocating. She’d never had a single day of peace and security.
’No wonder she was so insistent on leaving, so determined to get a divorce.’
Her heart aching, Roxanne grabbed Annabelle’s hand and said guiltily, "Annabelle, maybe Mom was a little out of line in the past. Can you forgive me?"
Annabelle’s lips curved into a gentle smile. "There’s nothing to forgive. I never felt that you did anything wrong, Mom."
Annabelle meant it.
She truly never felt that Roxanne Jennings had done anything wrong.
She was just fiercely protective of her son.
On the contrary, she used to envy Leona Grant for having a mother who loved him so dearly.
Roxanne looked at Annabelle and realized how much she’d grown to like this young woman.
She was beautiful, multi-talented, cultured, and well-mannered.
’No wonder my father-in-law liked her so much and insisted on marrying her to Leona. The Old Master saw her worth from the very beginning.’
Roxanne said with a sigh, "Annabelle, you are such a wonderful woman. Leona is fortunate beyond measure to have married you."
Annabelle’s lips curved at her words, and she said softly, "He’s wonderful, too."
Leona Grant, hearing this from outside the door, suddenly felt a warmth spread through his heart.
KNOCK KNOCK—
There was a knock at the door.
Annabelle went to open the door. Before she could even react, Leona Grant pulled her into his arms and stole a kiss.
She froze, completely stunned. It was only a moment later that she finally processed what had happened...
’Mom is still here!’
Annabelle’s face burned. ’This man seems to exist just to embarrass me...’
Leona Grant held her tightly, Annabelle’s face pressed against his chest, unable to move.
She pounded on his chest, her muffled voice urgent and low. "Leona Grant, let go of me! Mom’s still here."
Seeing her adorable, flustered expression, Leona couldn’t help but laugh.
Seeing that her son only had eyes for Annabelle, Roxanne smiled with fond exasperation.
’I used to worry about Leona’s love life, but clearly, I was overthinking things.’
Roxanne walked over and said teasingly, "Since you two are getting along so well, why don’t you have a baby soon? You’ll find that having a child is what will make your relationship truly complete."
Leona Grant looked down at Annabelle, a roguish grin on his face. "Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll work hard at it."
Annabelle: "..."
’Back when their relationship was on the rocks, their go-to line was always, "We’ll work on it." Now, it’s suddenly become, "I’ll work on it..."’
Annabelle was utterly speechless.
’How can he be so shameless? He’s absolutely incorrigible!’
And so, saddled with the momentous responsibility of making a baby, Leona Grant resolutely whisked Annabelle—whom his family had wanted to stay over—back to their own home, where he could immediately get to work on his duties.
