Chapter 495 - 496: Risking Life to Court Death
That was why he was willing to humble himself completely, to hoist her pride high above, protecting it from all harm.
Loving someone, simply put, is about compromise and sacrifice.
Leona Grant might not have been gentle or reasonable. He could be inexplicably childish, selfish, and domineering. But it was these many flaws that made his acceptance of Annabelle Linton so unique.
Sometimes, the measure of a person’s love isn’t how much they’ve given you.
Instead, it’s how much they are willing to give up for you.
There is a definite distinction. When you love someone, what you sacrifice and what you concede should be directly proportional.
What you gain and what you lose should be as well.
This was why Leona Grant loved so painfully, yet refused to let go.
Because Annabelle Linton was the one person in the world for whom he would willingly cast aside all reason and self-interest to love.
...
It was a death wish.
Remember when Leona Grant and Annabelle Linton were getting divorced, and he went to The Sundered Lands?
Leona Grant claimed to have picked up some basic cooking skills and could handle simple meals.
But after a few months of not cooking, he’d apparently returned all his skills to his teacher.
And yet, this morning he’d dismissed all the servants and woken up early to make a so-called "breakfast made with love."
It was absurd.
’It’s just breakfast. If you can’t cook, just grab a couple slices of bread and a glass of milk. At the very least, you could make some porridge. But what the hell is this supposed to be?’
Annabelle Linton furrowed her brow. She used her chopsticks to pick up a piece of meat, so blackened it was impossible to identify, and stared at Leona Grant in disbelief. "Where did you find this?"
"..." Leona Grant’s pride took a small hit. "It’s for you."
Annabelle Linton: "..."
She set down her chopsticks and frowned at him. Thinking he was still stewing over last night and trying to get revenge, she shot back, "Then why aren’t you eating it?"
"I will. But I wanted to give the first bite to you."
He said, in high spirits, picking up a piece of the meat with his chopsticks and holding it to her lips. "Go on, eat up. I made it myself."
’Mom, save me...’
Annabelle Linton swore she really did not want to eat it.
But seeing the expectant look on his face, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse. She closed her eyes and took a bite.
’Don’t get me wrong, it’s not because I’m kind. I just know that once this man gets an idea in his head, not even ten bulls could hold him back.’
’What if he tried to make me finish this entire table of... food?’
Annabelle Linton chewed a couple of times, her face expressionless. Suddenly, a thought struck her.
’Leona Grant had better not be a woman in his next life, or he’d be the death of his entire family!’
’My poor taste buds...’
When she finally, painfully, managed to swallow, Leona Grant’s eyes were sparkling as he looked at her, his face practically begging for praise. "So? How was it? Was it good?"
Annabelle Linton set down her chopsticks and looked at him seriously. Instead of answering, she asked a question of her own. "Can you hand me my phone?"
Though he didn’t understand why she needed it, he handed it over, even offering a suggestion. "Here. Are you going to take a picture to show off? I’m telling you, put this dish right in the center. The colors are great, it’ll look good in a photo."
"No." Annabelle Linton took the phone, placed it beside her, and said with a calm, deadpan expression, "Time is of the essence. When I get food poisoning in a minute, I want to be able to call for an ambulance myself, immediately."
Leona Grant: "..."
He’d made one meal, only to be crushed like this.
In disbelief, he picked up his chopsticks and tried a bite...
"I’m sorry," Leona Grant said, his expression serious. "We should probably just eat out."
Annabelle Linton shrugged helplessly, then pulled some ingredients from the fridge and headed into the kitchen. "Give me ten minutes."
