Chapter 478: Leaving The Base
Two days later, three off-road vehicles drove out of the underground city and left the safety of the base.
In the lead vehicle, Assistant Yao was the driver, while Lu Zhen and Leng Pan sat comfortably in the back seat.
If not for the devastation around them, one would have thought that this was before the apocalypse when Assistant Yao drove his boss to meetings.
Lu Tao had insisted on following his brothers and with no other choice, Lu Zhen had to promise to watch over him and protect him.
Thus, he was the five-hundred-watt bulb in the car. However, he didn’t seem to care about this and was engrossed in observing their surroundings as if he had already started searching for the stones they were looking for.
In the following car, Ouyang Jin took the wheel while Silk sat in the passenger seat.
Three other people sat in the back including ZaiZai, Su Yan, and Sonny.
In the car at the back, Vanish was driving with Lu Hao in the passenger seat.
Blaze, Janna, and Shade sat at the back.
In total, the group consisted of thirteen people and a wolf.
It wasn’t a big group, but it wasn’t small either. If they met danger, they were a deterrence force.
As they left the base, the could see how all the plants have been completely consumed and even stones had holes from being bitten by the sharp teeth of the locusts.
It was a miracle that they could even see the rabble of the destroyed buildings.
The roads had long been destroyed by the falling meterorites with not a single one left intact.
Nevertheless, over the past year or so, people had gotten used to driving on uneven roads filled with potholes.
With good cars like the ones Leng Pan’s team was driving, it wasn’t a big problem to drive on this kind of road.
They just hoped that they would find a place to take refuge when it was time for those locusts to pass by.
After all, those things didn’t discriminate. If they happened to be in the open when they passed, not only will their cars be forteit, but so would their lives.
Thus, Lu Zhen took an offline map from the hiking bag he had packed and looked at it for a while.
"Let’s head towards Tayi City. Even though it was one of the first cities to fall, the population there before the apocalypse was barely two million. Even if everyone turned into a zombie, the zombies will be distributed around the city and the most we will face is a few thousand at a time." Lu Zhen said as he folded the map and put it back in the bag.
"A few months ago, no one would even have thought of venturing into a dead city like Tayi City. Yet, here we are, going there as if on vacation." Leng Pan jested.
"We didn’t have the strength before. If we had dared to enter Tayi City, we would probably have joined the undead army. However, now we have sufficient strength. So, it won’t hurt to search there. Especially since many people have avoided it from the beginning. There is a high chance we can find what we are looking for there." Lu Zhen explained with a smile.
Of course, he knew his beloved wasn’t afraid, but it was his duty as a husband to comfort her.
Even if that comforting style wasn’t conventional.
"Big brother, if the city is so untouched, then doesn’t that mean that we might find supplies in the city?" Lu Tao, who had been quietly looking around suddenly turned to look back and speak to his brother.
Only to turn back in a hurry again and look forward as if everything else was interesting except inside the car.
He hadn’t expected that while his brother spoke in a serious tone explaining the situation inside Tayi City, he was actually nibbling on his sister-in-law’s ears.
Was he seducing his wife inside the car? How could the two of them not consider a young child like him when they engaged in such intimate behavior?
Lu Tao wanted to switch cars and go ride with his second brother. He should switch places with Shade. He was a wolf anyway and it wouldn’t matter if it saw something it wasn’t supposed to see.
Yet, Lu Tao didn’t dare to voice his grumbling and could only complain in his heart.
Lu Zhen, on the other hand, behaved as if nothing had happened.
He spoke with the same serious tone as before, but Lu Tao wouldn’t be fooled anymore.
"It is possible, if mutated rats and other creatures haven’t infested the city, there is a high possibility that we will find supplies within the city. However, it won’t be easy to collect them with so many zombies of unknown level in the city. Even though we have the strength now, we still need to be cautious." Lu Zhen didn’t want his teammates to become complacent and underestimate the situation inside the city.
This could lead to unforseen consequences. Thus, he emphasized this to his younger brother.
"I understand, brother, I won’t joke about with my life." Lu Tao hurriedly promised.
He knew that they hadn’t gone far enough and if he showed signs of recklessness, his brother would definitely take him back.
They had been driving for three hours when Lu Zhen looked at the watch on his wrist and said to Assistant Yao, "Let’s find a place to stop and rest while we wait for the locusts to pass. They are almost here."
The group had left the base at five in the morning and the first wave of locusts was about pass. So, they needed to find cover.
"There is a small town three kilometers from here. We can stop there and eat breakfast before continuing our journey once the locusts pass." Assistant Yao said.
This assistant was still as professional as ever. It felt as if he knew everything and once his boss gave the order, he could find the most suitable solution.
How professional!
