Chapter 542 Siege 9
Watching the series of events unfold, Addison couldn’t help but feel a little amazed.
A single warbear had managed to turn the tide of the battle.
Now she finally understood why it had taken so many werewolves just to apprehend and capture one. This was the first time she had ever witnessed a warbear fighting up close, and the sheer power it displayed was astonishing.
With every swing of its massive paws, monsters and wild animals were crushed or thrown aside. The battlefield that had once been overwhelming for the werewolves was now slowly stabilizing under the warbear’s relentless assault.
Because of its continuous attacks, the werewolves finally found an opportunity to regroup.
The scattered warriors gradually pulled back toward one another, reforming their lines and protecting their wounded companions. Although many of them remained wary of the warbear, they could clearly see that it had come from their side and was focusing solely on attacking the monsters and wild animals.
That alone was enough to give them some confidence.
Still, they didn’t completely trust it.
Instead, they carefully stepped aside and allowed the warbear to take the front while they used the brief respite to recover. Some of the wolves focused on healing their injuries, while others prepared themselves to rejoin the battle.
Meanwhile, the warbear stood at the front like an immovable wall, relentlessly swatting away the incoming monsters and wild animals without taking a single step back.
Because of the warbear’s arrival, the tide of the battle quickly began to turn.
The werewolves’ morale, which had been wavering just moments ago, gradually returned as they saw the massive beast holding the enemy at bay. With each monster the warbear crushed or sent flying, their confidence slowly rebuilt.
However, Addison knew this situation wouldn’t last forever.
The warbear might be incredibly strong, but even a creature like that had its limits. Fighting alone against so many monsters and wild animals would quickly drain its strength. Sooner or later, it would need to withdraw and recover before it could continue fighting.
For now, though, the crisis on this side of the wall had been temporarily resolved.
The warbear had effectively become the pillar supporting this section of the battlefield.
And because of that, Addison finally had the freedom to leave this area for a short while and check on the other sides of the wall.
And so she acted.
Addison left the warriors stationed on top of the wall to continue watching over the battlefield while she was away.
"I need to check the other side of the wall," she said firmly. "Keep watch over the situation here. If anything drastic happens, send someone to find me immediately and report it."
With that, Addison turned around, ready to leave.
The warrior she had just assigned to oversee this section was momentarily stunned. He hadn’t expected to suddenly be given such a heavy responsibility. For a brief second, he opened his mouth, wanting to ask a question or clarify his orders.
But before he could say anything—
Addison had already moved.
Her figure disappeared down the wall’s path as swiftly as the wind, leaving the warrior with no choice but to shoulder the task she had entrusted to him.
Addison ran as fast as she could toward the southern section of the wall, the area closest to the eastern side. That part of the territory was darker and far more overgrown, thick with trees and dense greenery.
Because of that terrain, she feared that more monsters and wild animals might be approaching from that direction.
Of course, the question remained: why had she sent the warbear to the eastern side instead of somewhere else?
The answer was simple.
At that moment, the situation there had been the most dangerous because of the monstrous bear rampaging through their lines. Reinforcing that area had been the most urgent choice.
But now that the situation had stabilized somewhat, Addison could reconsider her options.
If the southern side, or any other part of the wall, turned out to be in an even worse situation than the eastern side, she could always recall the warbear and send him wherever support was needed most.
Of course, doing that would also exhaust him far more quickly than anyone else on the battlefield.
Still, there was another reason she didn’t want him staying in one place for too long.
If the warbear remained stationed on a single section of the wall, the warriors and even the Alpha responsible for that area might slowly grow complacent. They might begin relying too heavily on his strength, placing all their hopes on his presence to turn the battle in their favor.
That would be a dangerous mindset.
Instead of learning to depend on others, the warriors needed to sharpen their own abilities, improving their combat instincts, their split-second decision-making, and their awareness on the battlefield.
Only by facing danger themselves could they truly grow stronger.
However, when Addison reached the southern section of the wall, the situation there was no better than the one on the eastern side.
In fact, it was just as chaotic.
Recalling the warbear now wasn’t an option either; the warbear was still dealing with the monstrous bear. Pulling him away at this moment would only create another crisis.
"Everyone hold the line!!!"
The Alpha responsible for this side of the wall roared from a platform behind the wall.
Addison quickly spotted him.
At the moment, he was standing completely naked, a detail Addison deliberately tried to ignore since his back was facing her anyway. His muscular body, typical of an Alpha, was drenched in sweat and covered with numerous wounds.
The sight alone showed how fiercely he had fought earlier.
His wolf form had clearly been pushed to its limit. It had endured so much damage that his natural healing ability could barely keep up with the injuries anymore. Because of that, he had been forced to retreat behind the wall briefly to recover and catch his breath.
But instead of leaving everything to the frontline warriors, the Alpha had quickly reorganized their forces.
Originally, the warriors stationed here had been divided into separate groups. Now, he had regrouped them into two larger teams to increase their numbers on the frontline and better match the waves of monsters and wild animals charging at them.
It wasn’t a perfect solution.
While the larger groups helped prevent their lines from being pushed back too easily, it also meant the warriors had very little time to rest and recover.
At the moment, the second group was already fighting on the frontline.
The first group had suffered too many injuries earlier. Some warriors were now being treated by healers behind the wall, desperately trying to recover so they could return to the battlefield and rotate shifts with the second group once they were able.
The cycle would repeat as long as they could hold on.
Technically, changing the battle plan without permission might count as insubordination.
But he was still an Alpha.
And on the battlefield, an Alpha had the authority to make decisions based on the situation.
Addison couldn’t help but feel a hint of respect for him.
It took courage and awareness to recognize when plans needed to bend. If he had stubbornly followed the original orders, the first group of warriors, including himself, might have already collapsed under the relentless assault.
The monsters and wild animals were fighting with terrifying ferocity.
It was as if they didn’t care whether they lived or died.
And for any warrior, there was nothing more difficult to fight than an enemy that didn’t fear death, especially when they did.
"Everyone, prepare to change shifts in five minutes!" the Alpha roared toward the warriors behind him who were being treated.
His command served two purposes. It alerted the injured warriors to get ready to return to battle, and at the same time it reminded those on the front line to hold the line just a little longer.
Hearing this, Addison frowned.
’Aren’t they changing shifts too quickly?’ she wondered.
Even if they weren’t the most battle-experienced fighters, they were still werewolves. Their instincts alone should allow them to hold out longer than this. Werewolves were not weak creatures.
For them to be pushed back this badly, something had to be wrong.
With that thought in mind, Addison climbed up onto the platform to see the battlefield for herself.
Her sudden appearance surprised the Alpha standing there. He hadn’t even sensed her approaching. However, he didn’t question her presence and simply stepped aside, allowing her to look beyond the wall.
The moment Addison saw what was happening on the other side—
Her face changed instantly.
First pale.
Then flushed with a mix of fear, anger, and disbelief.
The battlefield wasn’t filled with just goblins, monsters, and wild animals.
There were ogres.
Two of them.
The massive creatures rampaged through the battlefield like living battering rams, smashing through the werewolves’ defensive lines. The warriors on the front line were barely holding them back, and many of them were being thrown around like cannon fodder just to slow the monsters down.
