Chapter 85: Digging
They were quiet for a while.
"Huh? A stream? How’s that possible?" Little Black asked. He was as confused as the others. They didn’t seem to understand how the beavers could help with creating more streams.
But Sunnie smiled confidently. "Don’t worry, I know what I’m talking about. And they can help us perfectly with it."
Luka stared at Eris and Karl, who casually shrugged. He too didn’t understand what the hell was going on.
Sunnie smiled as Little Black conveyed the message to the beavers. They too didn’t seem to understand how that was even possible.
And after that, Sunnie explained what they needed to do: helping them clear a portion of land to make a big enough stream space, then dig deep enough to connect to the underground where waters would flow from deep underground up to the stream—natural water that hasn’t been contaminated yet.
As she explained that, they all slowly nodded.
"Ah, I didn’t know that was a thing..." Luka nodded.
"How are you supposed to know? All you do is eat," Karl said as Luka glared at him.
Azure smiled proudly. He had heard of such theories but hadn’t really seen them in action—water coming from deep underground. Indeed, his female was really smart.
Little Black informed the beavers as they slowly nodded. The male beaver said, "If that’s the case, don’t worry, we can get it done immediately. Just give us your instructions, and I’ll call my friends around, and we can all make it happen." Little Black interpreted.
Sunnie smiled. "That’s more like it! Thanks a lot. We appreciate."
Sunnie and the rest exchanged their goodbyes with them. The beavers would be arriving soon with some help for the work. So Sunnie and the rest took the baby and made their way back through the hole they came from.
---
As soon as they came out of the hole with Sunnie carrying the baby, everyone cheered in pure excitement. It happened that they were all sitting around the hole, waiting for them.
The quiet woman looked pale and worried sick. But as soon as she saw Sunnie with her baby, she quickly rushed to them.
Sunnie smiled while handing her baby to her. "Here, she’s safe and sound," she said while staring at the bright smile on her face.
The woman happily accepted the baby with tears of joy and relief running down her eyes. She simply couldn’t believe her eyes.
Sunnie sighed as she looked around. "Since we’re done with that, I think we should get back to work at least. Let’s get somewhere with the house."
No one questioned. They were relieved that they were back and safe. No one questioned how it happened. They believed Sunnie was enough to lead them all.
---
They took a quick break and then proceeded with work.
They had successfully mounted the sticks for the two huts they were making. What was left was properly adding the shelters to them.
But before they could even start doing that, they heard another loud noise. The ground was shaking, like something was coming. This time, it was a bigger earthquake than the previous one.
Everyone looked around as Zuna panicked. "I think they’re coming again! Those underground animals...!"
But Sunnie was calm. They all stared into the distance as five beavers came out of their holes, their heads up while they stared at them. Sunnie recognized the father.
The mice all stepped backwards as Zukka said, "What do we do now?"
But Sunnie smiled. "Don’t worry, guys. They’re here to help us with something."
"....."
Zukka and Zuna stared at each other, blinking. "Huh?"
Sunnie smiled as she explained everything to them. They all slowly nodded while staring at the beavers who were waiting at a distance.
"So they’re here to help us with a stream?" Zuna asked.
Sunnie nodded. "Getting water is hard for us here. And water is something vital we need. So they’ll help us create a stream around here so we can easily get water for anything when we need it."
Everyone smiled. They loved this idea so much. They were simply excited for it.
"But how’s that possible?" Zukka was confused.
Sunnie smiled. "Don’t worry about it. Just you watch as it gets done."
Sunnie, her husbands, Little Black, and Zukka led the way with the beavers following. Sunnie had taken her time to analyze the environment to figure out the spot that would be best for a stream.
She found a spot behind their habitation spot—somewhere a bit distant but not too far from them. With the land space and all, it would be perfect for a stream. The land was already clear from all their hard work of clearing the space to mark the land as their habitation—a space for their future tribe.
Sunnie presented her request to the beavers through Little Black: digging through the land from one distance to another, one big enough for a stream or more. She had given, with illustration, the length and width of what she wanted. She had even drawn on the ground for them to see.
And after giving the detailed instructions on what she needed, the beavers nodded without any objection.
Little Black passed on their message. "Don’t worry! We’ll be done in no time!"
Sunnie and the rest stood at the side as they watched the beavers approach the scene. They sniffed the land and did their preparations.
"Are you sure about this?" Eris asked.
"I’m more than sure," Sunnie folded her arms with a smile.
---
The beavers were indeed as fast as they claimed they would be.
Sunnie and the rest stood there watching as they sped through the ground. They started by digging through the ground and then letting sections fall into each other. They dug deep and cleared the space to level it.
Soon, it was taking shape. The space for the stream was being made and dug, and they kept going deeper and deeper. It was a broad enough space for even a river now, and the hole was deep enough for a mermaid to live in as well.
