Chapter 171: Chaotic Farming.
They all arrived at the farm that morning. The chipmunks instructed the husbands to help bring out the crops that needed to be planted and disperse them on the ground.
They did as they were told while the chipmunks strolled around the farm to observe it. The husbands brought out the major crops—the main things they needed to plant to survive.
They had potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, pumpkins, cabbage, onions, garlic, wheat, rice, and other vital crops and ingredients they would need. It was a versatile selection that could cover most of what they would need in the future.
Planting of the crops proceeded. The chipmunks finished their inspection. They had checked the soil quality, decided the planting depth, measured spacing, and even predicted the weather to some extent. Today was perfect for a start.
Sunnie sat at her usual spot, carrying Maren in her arms, as she watched them work with a smile. The chipmunks gathered everyone for some instructions.
"Does anyone at least know how to plant?" the leader of the chipmunks asked, arms folded, as he stared at them.
They all looked at each other. No one said anything until Little Black said, "Well, I’ve stayed here long enough, so maybe I can try..."
The leader sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I can’t believe I’ll be working with you all. How can none of you plant? You’ve never done it before?"
"Nah, I’ve never worked before, though," Eris said proudly, arms folded.
The leader frowned.
"Well, I’ve seen people farming before... a lot of times..." Luka smiled. "But I was too busy waiting for their harvest to steal to care about how they did it."
"....."
The chipmunk shook his head as he said, "I guess I have no choice. Okay, you all will watch us work and learn. Understood?"
Luka and Little Black nodded.
And so the chipmunks proceeded with planting the crops to show them how it was done. The beast husbands watched as they dug and planted different crops in different styles while demonstrating the process.
After some time, the chipmunks turned to them, and their leader said, "Okay, now try."
They nodded and proceeded to attempt what they had seen the chipmunks do while the chipmunks monitored them.
Eris took one plant and dug a decent hole. The chipmunks stared curiously. At least he had dug the hole; perhaps he would get things right.
But he proceeded to plant the crop upside down and then covered it with soil without much effort.
"...."
"No! Not that way! Bring it out!" The leader approached him and said, "You can’t plant crops upside down like that. You have to position it correctly." He dug out the crop that had been planted wrongly and corrected him. "You see? Do it like that!"
Eris simply stared. "But does it matter which position? It’s still in the ground after all..." He blinked.
"...." The leader blinked, speechless.
The leader moved to the next person and observed them working. He was speechless when he saw Luka digging a huge hole and tossing all the seeds into it.
"No!" he cried out as he rushed toward him. But it was already too late. Luka had tossed all the seeds into the tiny hole and covered it with sand immediately. He was rushing to get done with the work.
Luka smiled. "Don’t worry, I did it so well."
"...." He stared at Luka. "You can’t dig holes that big! The seeds will disappear!"
"...." Luka blinked. "But it’s inside the ground, isn’t it?"
The leader sighed, running a hand through his head while he mourned the seeds that were probably gone for good.
He began instructing Luka, teaching him how not to dig huge holes that would literally swallow the seeds.
After he was done, he turned and noticed Azure pouring a huge amount of water onto the ground after the seeds were planted.
"Ah!" He rushed toward the scene and stopped him. "You can’t pour that much water!" He stopped him, lecturing him on the amount of water needed.
But it was already too late—he had already poured enough water to turn the area into a swamp.
Karl and Zayn stood together, staring at the plants they had. After a moment of deliberation, Karl suggested, "Instead of moving around and making different holes, shouldn’t we just make a bigger hole that can contain them all?"
Zayn nodded at this suggestion. "I think that works well too."
And so the two of them, sharing the same brain cells, dug a very large hole and tossed most of the crops inside.
But before they could start covering it, the leader of the chipmunks saw them and snapped, "What are you guys doing?!"
He almost fainted as he rushed to the scene and stopped them. "How can you do that? That’s not how any of this works!"
But they stared at him.
"Well, are you sure about that?" Karl asked. "It seemed pretty normal to me, though."
"....." The leader didn’t know what to do. A part of him simply wanted to faint. Teaching these beast husbands didn’t seem to yield any results at all.
He lectured the two of them not to cut corners but to make different holes for designated crops.
He was done with them and moved to the next group. Little Black had literally eaten the potatoes meant to be planted and was now trying to cleanse his tongue while Zukka laughed.
"Why would you eat that?!" the leader questioned, losing his patience.
"I thought they were edible!" Little Black panicked.
The atmosphere was chaotic. The same cycle repeated: the chipmunks helped plant the crops while moving around to monitor what others were doing, and it was a complete mess.
Sunnie simply sat down, smiling at the scene. Just then, her system beeped. A new task arrived.
