Chapter 319: A Summons, a Hasty Return
"A partnership? Miss Winters, you must be mistaken. Hasn’t the contract already been torn up?" Tommy immediately countered.
Aya Winters was speechless. ’How dare this assistant talk back to me!’
’Didn’t he hear President Fairchild just say he’d give him one chance?’
The elevator arrived. Evan Fairchild stepped inside immediately. Just as Aya Winters was about to follow, Tommy blocked her way. "This is President Fairchild’s private elevator. Miss Winters, please use the ones over there."
The doors to Evan Fairchild’s elevator slid shut, and the color drained from Aya Winters’s face.
’What is the meaning of this?’
’Shouldn’t Evan Fairchild have scolded that assistant? Is the contract off now? What is going on?’
’I already had my people leak the story to the media.’
’The press already got photos of me coming to Starfall today. If I don’t end up signing with them, how can I possibly save face?’
Only then did she realize that Evan Fairchild’s earlier words weren’t meant to back her up at all.
’My contract... is being decided by a mere assistant?’
Aya Winters was pale with fury. She had never been treated like this! For her to be so proactive, only to end up with this result!
Fuming, she spun around and stalked toward the other elevator.
...
Evan Fairchild started the car and quickly merged into traffic. A man who never used GPS, he now had it open, checking the traffic conditions on the various routes home.
He found the fastest one and headed in that direction.
Melody Monroe leaned back on the sofa and checked the time. Only a few minutes had passed.
’I wonder where Evan Fairchild is and how long it’ll take him to get back.’
’Should I go ahead and order food?’
Suddenly, her phone chimed with a notification.
"What do you want to eat?"
"I’m not picky. Anything is fine."
"You haven’t eaten this late, you must be starving, right?"
"A little bit hungry."
"I’ll be back soon."
A little over ten minutes later, the door opened.
Melody Monroe turned to look, and Evan Fairchild appeared before her, holding an exquisite little box.
"What’s this?"
"Weren’t you hungry? I bought you a piece of cake. You can have some first. I’m going to take a shower, and then we can go out to eat together."
"It’s so late, we don’t need to go out, do we? Let’s just order something here at the hotel." Melody Monroe was a natural homebody, and given her current status, she couldn’t just go out casually anyway. She wasn’t bothered by this; in fact, she found it quite comfortable.
"Are you afraid of being photographed if you go out with me?"
"Yes, that’s part of the reason," Melody Monroe answered honestly.
Evan Fairchild felt a pang of annoyance.
He wasn’t afraid in the slightest.
"You go take your shower first. I’ll order the food."
Evan Fairchild nodded.
Melody Monroe immediately picked up her phone, leaned back on the sofa, and ordered a few of the dishes they usually ate.
The sound of rushing water came from the bathroom. She couldn’t help but glance in that direction, and certain images began to flash through her mind.
She quickly shook her head, not daring to let her thoughts wander any further.
She opened the cake box on the table and swallowed.
But she didn’t dare to eat it.
’If I eat this whole cake, how many pounds will I gain?’
’But just one bite should be fine, right? I’ll just try a little taste. Just one bite!’
Melody Monroe stuck out her finger, gently dabbed the cake, and brought it to her lips for a taste.
’This is so delicious! It’s yogurt-flavored! It’s my favorite kind, not too rich at all.’
One bite was no longer enough to satisfy her. Her stomach began to rumble, and her brain started to protest. Aside from wanting to eat, she could think of nothing else.
Evan Fairchild emerged from the bathroom after his shower, wearing a loosely tied bathrobe.
