Chapter 92: The Face-slap Comes Like a Tornado
"The exhaust is terrible!"
"Who on earth is that, speeding around here this late at night!"
Melody Monroe watched the black luxury car, her brow furrowed tightly. "No matter who it is, they’re completely obnoxious."
Inside the car, Tommy was gripping the grab handle tightly.
’President Fairchild, you’re speeding! You’re speeding!’
’President Fairchild, can I please get out?’
’President Fairchild is furious! But why am I the one being put through this mental anguish?!’
...
Jasper Rockwell had just finished his shower and was walking out of the bathroom, a bathrobe draped over his shoulders.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
’So late? Who would be looking for me now?’
He pulled open the door to find Evan Fairchild standing before him, his face dark and grim. Jasper sucked in a sharp breath, his heart practically leaping out of his chest in fright!
"Evan, you... are you trying to fucking scare me to death?! Seeing your grim-reaper face in the middle of the night! Do you have any idea? I was *this close* to dropping dead on the spot!" Jasper Rockwell held up his hand, pinching his thumb and forefinger together to show how close.
Evan Fairchild swatted Jasper’s hand away and strode inside.
Watching Evan Fairchild’s retreating back, Jasper Rockwell broke into a cunning, wolfish grin.
’Evan Fairchild wouldn’t answer his calls or return his texts, and I really thought he was just being his usual cold, aloof self, that he truly didn’t care! Holy crap! Talk about eating your words. That came out of nowhere, fast as a tornado!’
’I mean, the schedule of the great President Evan Fairchild is meticulously planned. It’s not supposed to change, and errors are not permitted! So what’s the reason for his sudden appearance in Jansburg?’
"Stop looking at me with that lecherous gaze!" Evan Fairchild walked over to the sofa and sat down. He unbuttoned his suit jacket and tossed it to the side.
"You show up in the middle of the night looking for me. How am I supposed to think pure thoughts?" Jasper Rockwell said, leaning against a cabinet with his arms propped up.
’He was about to burst. He wanted to roar with laughter, to ask Evan Fairchild if his cheeks were stinging from getting proven so wrong.’
’But, he didn’t dare.’
"The hotel is fully booked. I’m crashing here with you tonight."
"Absolutely not!" Jasper Rockwell immediately refused, unable to resist a taunt. "Melody is staying here, too. Why don’t you go crash in her room for the night?"
"Melody?" Evan Fairchild’s brow furrowed deeply.
’That look,’ Jasper Rockwell thought, ’is a death glare, plain and simple.’
"Didn’t you say you weren’t interested in her? So are you jealous of me, or just envious? President Fairchild, why did you suddenly come to Jansburg, anyway?" Jasper Rockwell asked pointedly.
"I have matters to attend to at Starfall Corporation. It’s part of my scheduled itinerary."
"You don’t have to specially explain your schedule to me. So, why would the great President Fairchild show up at *this* hotel so late at night? Surely you didn’t miss me! Missed me so much you had to come see me in the middle of the night!"
"That’s right. I missed you," Evan Fairchild said, undoing the buttons on his cuffs.
Jasper Rockwell immediately recoiled.
’Okay, that’s enough, that’s enough,’ he thought. ’This dancing on the edge of death has got to stop!’
"Where are you sleeping?" Evan Fairchild asked.
"I... I’ll sleep wherever. It’s all up to President Fairchild’s whim."
"My greatest hope is that you’ll get out."
Jasper Rockwell: ...
’Evan Fairchild, do you have no shame?! You barge in here in the middle of the night to steal my room, my bed, and now you have the fucking nerve to try and kick me out?!’
"This is *my* room, President Fairchild. You’re the one crashing here."
"Is that right? I seem to recall being the one who paid for it."
Jasper Rockwell: ...
"I’ll sleep on the sofa," Jasper Rockwell said, pointing. "Evan, think of our bond! We’ve been friends since we were in diapers! You can’t just kick me out!"
Evan Fairchild stood up and headed for the bathroom.
Jasper Rockwell let out a long breath.
’If he hadn’t been kicked out of his house, if he hadn’t been reduced to working for Evan Fairchild, would he—the dignified Third Young Master of the Rockwell Family—have ended up in such a sorry state?!’
