Chapter 96: Is This All I’m Worth?
"This time, President Fairchild helped me too, so I’d say we’re even."
"If that elevator had crashed, I might have died. Therefore, Miss Monroe, you saved my life."
Melody Monroe was speechless.
"President Fairchild, you’re exaggerating! If I had truly saved your life, I would have stopped you from getting on the elevator in the first place. I didn’t manage to do that, so it can’t be considered life-saving."
"In that case, I misunderstood you, pulled you into the elevator with me, and nearly dragged you into a life-threatening situation. So, in addition to owing you for saving my life, I also need to compensate you."
Melody was completely baffled. ’Is it really that complicated!?’
She racked her brain but couldn’t think of anything to refute him.
’Cultured people really are different—their eloquence is on another level! He’s making such a far-fetched reason to repay me sound so logical and well-argued.’
Still, as long as he wasn’t here to confirm *that* matter, she would let him say whatever he wanted.
"It was a small thing, not worth mentioning. President Fairchild, you really don’t need to dwell on it."
"Are you implying my life isn’t valuable?"
"That’s not what I meant at all, President Fairchild. You’ve misunderstood!" Melody quickly explained. Since he was so intent on repaying her, she figured she might as well get it over with. "How exactly did you plan on repaying me, President Fairchild?"
"What do you want?"
Melody thought for a moment. "How about you give me a hundred thousand?"
Evan Fairchild frowned.
Melody immediately held up five fingers. "Fifty thousand. Fifty thousand is fine too."
Evan Fairchild’s frown deepened. "Is that all I’m worth?"
Melody choked.
’Was she supposed to ask for tens of millions or even a hundred million or something!’
’If he actually gave it to her, she’d be rich! She wouldn’t have to work for the rest of her life. She could take Ian, find a beautiful city, and live comfortably!’
Melody immediately squashed the thought. ’She was really getting ahead of herself.’
"Five hundred thousand!" Melody steeled her heart. ’Might as well ask!’
"Since I’m the one repaying you, I will do it my way." Evan Fairchild’s tone brooked no argument.
Melody was speechless. ’Does she not get a say in this at all?’
’Giving her money would have been so much better!’
’Don’t all these overbearing CEOs like to solve everything with money?’
’Why didn’t he just slap a five-hundred-thousand-dollar check in her face and tell her coldly, "Five hundred thousand! Now get out of my sight forever!"’
She would’ve definitely taken the money and scurried out of his sight! She would never bother him again!
BEEP! A sound came from the door, and Tommy walked in quickly, carrying a bag of medicine.
He had thought President Fairchild was the one who was injured. But when he saw Melody Monroe sitting on the sofa in a bathrobe, he froze instantly!
Melody looked at the newcomer. From the look in his eyes, she knew he had definitely gotten the wrong idea!
’This must be Evan Fairchild’s assistant, Tommy.’
’A character who appeared frequently in the original novel.’
"President Fairchild, here’s the medicine." Tommy put the items down and quickly retreated.
Once outside, Tommy patted his chest. That scene he had just witnessed was so thrilling!
"President Fairchild is really something else. Things are developing way too fast!"
...
Evan Fairchild picked up the medicine, walked over to Melody Monroe, and crouched down.
Startled by his action, Melody hurriedly said, "President Fairchild, you don’t have to. I can do it myself."
"Sit still."
Melody froze.
’Was it her imagination?’
’Evan Fairchild’s voice was actually... so gentle!’
Paired with his distinct, magnetic voice, it was incredibly pleasant to listen to.
The disinfectant stung as it was sprayed on her wound, and Melody flinched, pulling her leg back slightly.
"Does it hurt?" Evan Fairchild looked up at her.
’Damn it! What are these heaven-defying good looks!’
