Chapter 313: Quentin Blackwood: I Have a Girlfriend
Just then, another call came through on Quentin Blackwood’s phone.
Quentin Blackwood glanced at the screen and said into the phone, "I have something else to attend to. I’m hanging up."
He ruthlessly hung up on Joy Sheridan and answered the new call, his tone completely different from a moment ago.
"Still up this late?"
If Joy Sheridan had heard that, she would have been consumed by jealousy.
"Aren’t you up too, Mr. Blackwood? So, who were you just on the phone with?" Ivy Sherwood’s voice came from the other end.
"Joy Sheridan," Quentin Blackwood answered without any hesitation.
"You’re certainly honest, Mr. Blackwood."
Quentin said, "She called me. There’s no need to hide it. What, are you calling other men behind my back and afraid to tell me?"
"Of course not! I’m just calling for a surprise inspection to see what Mr. Blackwood is up to."
"Working." Quentin was still typing on his keyboard as he spoke with Ivy Sherwood.
Ivy could hear the sounds of his keyboard and mouse. "Still working at this hour, Mr. Blackwood? You’re so dedicated."
"How are things on your end?" Quentin asked.
"Everything’s fine."
"The Blackwood family hasn’t been causing you any trouble?"
Speaking of which, Ivy had a lot to say. "They’re too busy with their own problems to bother me. You have no idea, your sister-in-law got into a fight with Anna Nash’s parents. Anna’s father even ended up in the hospital. I hear the fighting is completely out of control."
Ivy chattered on, sharing all this with Quentin. ’Anna must be desperate to get her parents out of the picture,’ she thought, ’so I should be able to get my mother’s ashes soon.’
Ivy and Quentin continued to chat idly, neither of them hanging up the phone.
Meanwhile, Joy Sheridan, who had barely gotten two words in before Quentin hung up on her, was fuming.
She punched her blanket in frustration and tried calling Quentin again. The line was busy.
Joy had no choice but to hang up. After a little while, she tried again. Still busy.
An hour passed. Joy tried dialing one more time and found the line was still busy.
’Who on earth could be on the phone with Quentin for so long?’
Joy knew Quentin was at the office, so she left the hospital immediately.
She was intimately familiar with the DG Group, and she could go to Quentin’s office whenever she pleased.
It was very late, so there weren’t many people left at the company. Joy had always been able to come and go as she pleased. The security guards at the DG Group all knew her because she often bought them gifts, and they thought she was a nice person. Plus, as Miss Sheridan, she was very likely to be the future boss’s wife. So, getting into the DG Group was a simple matter for her.
DG was located on the ridiculously expensive Financial Street, a place where a single square meter cost a six-figure sum. DG had its own entire building there.
And it wasn’t a small building, either. It covered a large area, was built to be spacious, and the office environment was incredibly luxurious.
Furthermore, this was just the headquarters. In Aethelgard alone, there were several other branch office buildings, and many more branches in other cities.
Joy soon arrived at the entrance of the DG Building. She had already ordered food to treat everyone at the company who was still working overtime.
Joy was generous, and the food she ordered was very expensive.
The employees were delighted. Some said, "Thanks, Sheridan," while bolder ones said, "Thanks, boss’s wife."
Hearing the words "boss’s wife," Joy couldn’t stop smiling. She even gave an extra red envelope to those who had called her that.
Quentin, busy upstairs, was unaware of what was happening downstairs.
Only then did Joy carry a late-night meal up the stairs herself.
Quentin’s office was on the top floor. Only he and Zane Linton worked on this level; the main executive offices were on the floor below.
Quentin was still on the phone with Ivy Sherwood. He rarely spoke, mostly just listening to her and occasionally murmuring an "Mm."
Just then, there was a knock on the glass office door. Quentin looked up and saw Joy Sheridan standing at the entrance.
However, without waiting for his permission, Joy pushed the door open and walked right in. "Quentin, I knew you’d still be working."
"Why are you here?" Seeing Joy, Quentin’s expression visibly frosted over.
"I knew you were busy with work and had to hang up on me in a hurry. It must have been something urgent. You’re the type to forget to eat when you get busy, so I figured you might not have eaten yet and ordered some late-night food. Other people in the company were working overtime, so I ordered for them too. They were even joking about what a competent boss’s wife I’m turning out to be."
Joy walked over, deliberately bringing up the "boss’s wife" comment again.
"Joy! Watch your words." Quentin glanced at his phone; he was still on the call.
"What’s wrong with my words? Is there a problem? They’ve called me the boss’s wife in private before, and I never saw you say anything about it."
Ivy heard Joy’s voice through the phone. Joy had gone to find Quentin in the middle of the night and was even calling herself the boss’s wife.
’Joy is so accomplished, she can’t be short on suitors,’ Ivy mused. ’Why does she have to embarrass herself like this?’
"DG has a boss’s wife, but it’s not you. Joy, you and I..."
"Oh, just eat! The food will get cold, and you know you have a sensitive stomach," Joy interrupted, cutting him off mid-sentence.
Joy glanced at Quentin’s phone. Even though the screen was dark, she knew he hadn’t hung up yet.
She said deliberately, "My grandfather was asking when you’re coming over for dinner next. My uncle’s birthday is in a few days. How about I attend as your date?"
"Why are you looking at me like that? We’ve known each other for so many years, we’re practically childhood sweethearts. What intimate things haven’t we done together before?"
Afraid Ivy would misunderstand, Quentin grabbed his phone, stood up, and walked to the side. "I didn’t know she was going to show up. Don’t pay any mind to what she just said."
Ivy said, "I know. She’s saying all that on purpose. I’ll hang up now. You go handle it. Call me back when you’re done!"
"Okay." Quentin quickly ended the call.
He looked at Joy. "Get out!"
"I’m not leaving. Quentin, who were you on the phone with for so long?"
"That’s none of your business. Joy, I have a girlfriend now. I hope you’ll be more mindful of your boundaries and your behavior in the future."
The word "girlfriend" struck Joy like a physical blow. "You... what did you say?"
’Quentin actually admitted he has a girlfriend? Is it Ivy Sherwood?’
For so many years, Quentin had been the same with every woman: cold, distant, and never engaging in any overly intimate contact.
While plenty of clueless women had tried to get close to Quentin, Joy had always "dealt" with them. And because she knew Quentin wasn’t interested in them, she had always felt secure.
But now, Quentin was actually admitting he had a girlfriend!
Joy’s hands clenched into fists, her long nails digging into her palms. She couldn’t keep the smile on her face. Taking a deep breath, she forced a smile. "Quentin, this is just an excuse to reject me, right? Or you’re just playing around. I know men have these kinds of urges. I can forgive you."
